Living in Florida poses a lot of challenges for the average consumer when purchasing insurance. We position ourselves as an agency that shares information and we educate the consumer for the versatile marketplace we face. I want to share common misconceptions in purchasing homeowners; that in my 23 years in the industry I have come across. As you read these, please keep in mind they are all FALSE.   1. I can not change my insurance policy until it expires
  2. It is better if I have force placed insurance
  3. Citizens is the only carrier writing for the state of Florida
  4. I only need insurance during hurricane season
  5. I can get a shutter discount with only half of my home covered
  6. My personal property can only be 50% of the dwelling amount
  7. My dwelling amount coverage needs to be for the purchase price
  8. My policy covers my dogs
  9. My policy is a maintenance contract for my home
  10. Insurance companies are here to get me a new kitchen and new floors — when I am bored with what I have
  11. I have a free policy, it is included in my mortgage
  12. My bank does not care if I have insurance or not
  13. My ring worth 25K is covered on my policy, even though my agent knows NOTHING about it
  14. My home insurance policy includes flood insurance
  15. If I live in my home or rent it out it does NOT matter which policy I have
  16. If I live in a condo my association covers everything
  17. The age of my home or roof does NOT affect my premium
  18. I do not need to provide any proof of ownership to the insurance company if I have a loss
  19. There are NO discounts available to Florida homeowners
  20. If I pay cash for a property and not buy insurance, the state will cover if I have a loss
  21. Public Adjusters are who I should call first if I have a claim
